Hanmee English Ministry

exists to glorify God through:

Personal Restoration

Family Wholeness

Community Transformation

"Where there is no vision, the people perish..."

(Proverbs 29:18, KJV).

As a church, a community of believers, as agents for Christ, we believe it is absolutely vital that we understand and know what it is that God has purposed for us. What is our specific purpose as a church coming out of a Korean-American context? What can we specifically do for Christ and do well? What is the future of Hanmee English Ministry (HEM)? All these questions and more were addressed as we sought God's VISION for us at HEM. After spending much concerted effort, the fruit of our prayers, discussions, more prayer, study, and deliberations is our Vision Statement found above. We pray that as God has been faithful in giving us this Vision Statement, that He would continue in His faithfulness so that we might carry out and live this vision at Hanmee EM.

We believe that God desires for us to first of all have a restored relationship with Him through Jesus Christ and then with one another. "...Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...Love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:37-39, NIV). Having created us as relational beings, we are creatures in and of relationships. To be restored to God is our first priority. Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, knowing God through the presence of the Holy Spirit, and to be forgiven, healed, redeemed, restored is what being a Christian is all about. To have restored, healed, and full relationships with one another is the natural next step. People love one another. They also hurt one another - both willingly and unknowingly. At Hanmee, we are committed to first and foremost developing and nurturing that restored relationship with God but also to bring healing, reconciliation, and restoration with one another.

We also believe that our Lord God wants us to develop healthy and whole families. We use the term 'family' in a multi-dimensional way. Family can be understood as one's own immediate family (nuclear or extended), family of origin, or as a church family (the family of God). Again, being a congregation coming out of a Korean-American context, this idea of 'family' has played a vital and crucial cog in the spirit of the people. Though we may have witnessed and experienced much love and whole families, both at home and at church, as part of the personal and corporate immigrant experience, understanding 'Family Wholeness' may have been more alien than natural. Hanmee EM is committed to rediscovering God's idea of family. We mean a family that is healthy and whole on the homefront with mother, father, son, daughter, grandfather, and grandmother communicating, sharing, and growing in the Lord. We also mean a church family that is whole and truly desires to be a caring community comprised of diverse people but with one heart and Spirit.

Having been personally restored with God and with others, then living out God's intended idea of a whole family, we can then go into our communities and transform it into the likeness of God's kingdom. We do not want to exist as Christians living in a comfortable sheltered cocoon. There is hurt, pain, injustice, and suffering outside these safe walls. We are called by our Lord Jesus to "...go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you..." (Matthew 28: 19-20, NIV). To follow Christ is to go into our society, our communities and transform it into Christ's community. We at Hanmee are committed to making a difference, an impact, a transformation in our communities.

We realize this is a tough task. Vision is not for the faint of heart. Vision is not dependent on our present. It plans for, prepares for, and points to the future. "We are confident of this; that he who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6, paraphrase). With a clear picture of what God has for us for the future, with this VISION, we pray in faith and in hope that we will fulfill and live out God's vision for us.
